Kayaking With Your Dog: A Calm, Honest Guide

Cave Point County Park Kayak tours

Yes, you can kayak with your dog. No, you probably will not tip over, as long as you start on calm water and pick the right boat. Here is how to do it without the wet, panicked scramble most people picture, from a crew that has shared a lot of boats with a lot of dogs.

Pick the right boat: a sit-on-top

This is 80 percent of the battle. A wide sit-on-top kayak is the dog boat. It is stable, there is an open deck for your dog to sit or lie on, the surface gives their nails something to grip, and if anyone goes in the water, both of you can climb right back on. A narrow sit-inside with an enclosed cockpit is the opposite of what you want with a dog on board.

Get your dog a life vest

Even dogs that swim well should wear a canine life vest on the water. The good ones have a sturdy handle on the back, which is how you lift a wet, heavy dog back onto the deck without flipping. It also keeps a tired or panicked dog afloat while you sort things out. Non-negotiable.

Practice on land first

Before you ever launch, set the kayak on grass or sand and let your dog climb on and off, get treats, and learn that the boat is a calm, good place. Teach a simple sit and a stay on the deck. Ten minutes of this on dry land saves you a soaking later.

Start on calm, flat water

Your dog’s first paddle should be on the flattest, most protected water you can find, on a windless morning, close to shore. This is not the day for open water or chop. Let the first trip be short and boring. Boring is the goal. A good first outing teaches your dog there is nothing to fear.

Balance the boat and watch your dog

Keep your dog centered and low, ideally sitting or lying down rather than pacing. A dog that stands and shifts side to side is what actually rocks a kayak, far more than any wave. Keep treats handy, keep your own movements smooth, and head in the moment your dog looks stressed. Build up trip length over several outings, not all at once.

What to bring

  • A canine life vest with a back handle.
  • Fresh water and a collapsible bowl. Dogs overheat on the water fast.
  • A towel for the ride home.
  • Treats, for rewarding calm.
  • A small first-aid basics kit if you are going any distance.

An honest note about our tours

We get asked this a lot, so here is the straight answer: our guided tours are people-only, for the safety and comfort of everyone in the group. We love dogs. A guided sea-cave tour is just not the place for them.

For your own dog days: the calmest places to start are the protected bays near Fish Creek and the launches around Baileys Harbor. When you want a stable boat without buying one, we rent sit-on-top kayaks by the hour and day, perfect for an easy flatwater paddle with your pup.

Kayaking with your dog FAQ

Will my dog tip the kayak over?
Not on calm water in a wide sit-on-top, as long as your dog stays centered and reasonably still. A standing, pacing dog is what causes wobble, not the boat itself.

What is the best kayak for a dog?
A wide, stable sit-on-top. Open deck for the dog, easy to climb back onto, and a grippy surface for their paws.

Does my dog really need a life vest?
Yes. Even strong swimmers. The back handle is how you lift a wet dog back aboard, and it keeps a tired dog safe.

Can I bring my dog on one of your tours?
Our guided tours are people-only. For paddling with your dog, rent a sit-on-top from us and start on calm, protected water.
