Kalen Keir

Taking Off!

Kalen Keir grew up between Door County and Mexico, getting to know temperate extremes as well as many influential personalities in his travels. He learned to love the outdoors, whether surfing on the Mexican Pipeline or enjoying the fresh water of Lake Michigan, and decided to attend his last two years of high school in Colorado. There he discovered new heights - up to 15,000 feet. With guidance from several mentors at his new school, he was able to take part in climbing and hiking expeditions and snowboarding in the Rocky Mountains.

Yet between surfing and backpacking, he always finds his way back to Wisconsin, which he still calls home. Here he began kayaking on the lake, and trained to be a guide for DCKT.

To this guide it’s as important to reflect on experiences as it is to seek new discoveries, and he takes advantage of Door County’s quiet early summer for this purpose. Once things get rolling and people want to get on the water, he’s ready to meet the peninsula’s newcomers and show them around. At night he unwinds with friends old and new, around a campfire or at the concert barn at Camp David; you can find Kalen playing the saxophone with The Nicks & Friends, singing his own songs on guitar at open mics, or sailing on lake Michigan in the Barracuda.

Kalen will be back in the county after his second semester at the University of Minnesota, and looks forward to an eventful 2008 season out on the water, along with Dave Rack and the rest of the crew at Door County Kayak Tours. See you there.

Get outside.

Psyched… I just got a call from the guys at the U of MN’s
Center for Outdoor Adventure, and will be working with them as a trip leader next fall.
Now if only there were a COLLEGE for Outdoor Adventure…

a few of my friends have worked with Outward Bound Wilderness and received college credit via independant study through their school. It’s not a collage but a good way around it i suppose.
