| Destination Info: | "The Ridges Sanctuary is a 1,200 acre pristine natural area located in Door County, Wisconsin. Formed in 1937, it is the oldest nonprofit nature preserve in the state. The Ridges is also designated as a State Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark. The largest portion of The Ridges Sanctuary's land is located on the north end of Baileys Harbor. Much of this area is made up of a series of low, sandy ridges, alternating with wet areas called swales. The ridges run parallel to the shoreline of Baileys Harbor, and extend inland about a mile. Cooling breezes from Lake Michigan help to sustain a boreal forest in The Ridges Sanctuary" (http://www.ridgesanctuary.org/ properties.htm)
"Cana Island Lighthouse with its low dwelling and tall white tower surmounted by two story black lantern is perhaps Door County's most photographed, painted, and videotaped lighthouse. Perhaps this is because it looks most like what people think a lighthouse should look like." (http://www.dcmm.org/cana.html)Cana Island, built in 1869 and automated in 1944 is located on a small island just off shore, the grounds can be reached by wading across a causeway or by kayak! |
